Academy programme for 2017/18

We're delighted to announce our 2017/18 academy courses, which are open both to SOC members and non-members. The aim of the courses is to promote high quality choral singing, developing individual and choral singing skills. Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Music Theory

A four-week course led by our Musical Director, Alan Eost. This course focuses on key recognition, one of the most important aspects of sight-singing.

Dates: 11, 18, 25 October, 1 November 2017
Time: 6.45 p.m. – 7.15 p.m.
Fee: Members £15, Non-members £20

Sight-singing

A four-week course led by our Musical Director, Alan Eost. Topics covered include:

  • Sight-singing exercises and examples

  • Recognising scales, arpeggios and patterns

  • Work on rhythms

  • Memory and key awareness

Dates: 10, 17, 24, 31 January 2018
Time: 6.45 p.m. – 7.15 p.m.
Fee: Members £15, Non-members £20

Vocal Technique

A four-week course led by our Vocal Coach, Vivien Pike. The focus in this course includes:

  • Breathing and posture

  • Using breath evenly and singing a good line

  • Ascending and descending phrases / keeping pitch

Dates: 7, 14, 21, 28 February 2018
Time: 6.45 p.m. – 7.15 p.m.
Fee: Members £15, Non-members £20

Classes are held prior to SOC rehearsals at St. Andrew’s United Reform Church, Upper Hanover St, Sheffield, S3 7RQ. Following the classes, non-members will be welcome to stay and experience part of the evening rehearsal if they wish.

Unfortunately we are unable to refund the cost of individual sessions if you cannot attend all four weeks on a course. No discounts are available on fees.
